Audi’s Q7 SUV might look brutish on the outside, but it’s not so beastly to the environment as far as Earth, Wind & Power environmental awards are concerned. The big Q7 was the first clean diesel vehicle to hit U.S. streets this year was selected by the environmental group as “Most Environmentally Progressive Truck of the Year” at this year’s L.A. Auto Show.

Yes, even though it is an SUV, the Audi Q7 TDI is a very clean SUV. Thanks to its TDI clean diesel engine, the big ute is able to deliver 30 percent better fuel economy and reduce carbon emissions by 20 percent over gasoline engines. Impressive figures in both respects. And for those of you that don’t get the positive environmental and engineering aspects of racing, allow us to point out that Audi has been kicking butt and taking names with its TDI powered Mans racers.

The “Most Environmentally Progressive Truck of the Year” is presented by the Earth, Wind & Power Awards to recognize vehicles that contribute to the reduction of global warming, are conducive to promoting a cleaner environment, and that help reduce dependence on foreign oil through alternative energy sources. Audi was announced as the winner of this year’s prize at this years Los Angeles Auto Show.

Audi couldn’t be more pleased. “Energy independence and fuel efficiency are serious issues that need to be addressed. We are thrilled that TDI clean diesel technology is getting the recognition it deserves for the significant impact it can have on building a cleaner planet and reducing dependence on foreign oil. We are heavily invested in clean diesel technology and have worked over the past 20 years to create technology that is unsurpassed in the delivering raw power while promoting efficiency,” said Johan de Nysschen, President, Audi of America.

You can add the Most Environmentally Progressive Truck of the Year to the stack of laurels that Audi is receiving at this year’s L.A. show, with Audi also winning the Green Car of the Year award from Green Car Journal.
